The dolphins and turtles get the applause, but the real heroes of Florida Bay are the plants: mangroves and seagrass. Without them, there'd be nothing to see. On an eco tour, understanding these habitats changes how you see everything else.
The mangrove nursery
Red mangroves wade right into the saltwater on their stilt-like roots, and that tangle is a nursery. Young snapper, grouper, lobster and shrimp shelter there, safe from bigger predators, until they're grown enough to move out to the reef. Mangroves also buffer the coastline from storms and filter the water clear.
The seagrass meadows
