Snorkeling 101: First-Timer Tips for Key Largo Reefs

Never snorkeled before? You'll be a natural by the end of the sail.

A first-time snorkeler getting comfortable in the shallow Key Largo flats

If you've never snorkeled, the Florida Keys are the perfect place to start. The water near Pelican Key is shallow, warm and calm, and on a private snorkel sail our crew has all the time in the world to help you get comfortable.

Getting comfortable

  • Practice breathing first. Float face-down in shallow water and just breathe through the snorkel until it feels normal.
  • Get the mask seal right. A snug fit with no hair under the skirt keeps water out.
  • Relax your body. Tension makes you sink and tire; calm makes you float.
  • Use a flotation belt. No shame in it — it lets nervous swimmers relax and look down.

Why private is perfect for beginners

There's no line, no crowd and no rush. You can hang on the ladder, try for two minutes, climb out, and go again when you're ready. Most first-timers are grinning within ten minutes — and by the end of the sail, they're the ones who don't want to get out.

Everyone's a beginner once. We'll make yours easy.
