One of the joys of a private snorkel sail is the shallow, sun-lit water near the Pelican Key area, where you don't need to be a diver to see a world of color. Here's a field guide to what often swims by.
The usual cast
- Parrotfish — neon blues and greens, crunching on algae-covered rock.
- Sergeant majors & grunts — bold little fish that school close.
- Yellowtail snapper — silvery flashes that follow curiously.
- Sea fans & soft coral — swaying purple gardens on the bottom.
- Rays & the occasional sea turtle — the headliners, if you're lucky.
