Know your rays
- Southern stingrays — sandy-colored bottom-dwellers that fan the seabed for food, often half-buried.
- Spotted eagle rays — stunning, spotted gliders that "fly" through open water and sometimes leap clear.
- Bat rays & others — occasional visitors to the flats.
Spotting tips
Look for movement and shadow over light sand. Stingrays often give themselves away with a faint outline or a puff of sand as they feed. Eagle rays are easier — they cruise just under the surface in open water. Calm, clear conditions make all the difference, which is why morning trips win.
